Women Work Twice As Hard – Qing Madi Speaks On Challenges In Music Industry

Nigerian singer, Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma popularly known as Qing Madi has spoken about the struggles women face in the country’s music scene.

Naijaonpoint reports that the American Love crooner shared that the industry does not provide enough support for female artists and that the environment makes it harder for them to grow.

During a chat on the Wahala Podcast, the 19-year-old singer explained that women are often judged more harshly than their male colleagues.

She said that while men are allowed freedom to act as they wish, women are usually placed under strict expectations and face more criticism.

Qing Madi also said female artistes must put in double the effort to be recognised compared to men.

According to her, the constant pressure makes the journey difficult, but she remains proud of being a young woman in the music industry.

She also praised other women in the field, saying it takes courage and strength to keep pushing despite the challenges.

She said; “I think the [music] industry is not the best for women in terms of protecting women, loving women in general.

“Women have to do twice as much work as their male counterparts. Women are oftentimes criticised for nothing. But they don’t do that to the men. The men have the right to do whatever they like, but for the women, society just wants to box women so much.

“I go through that, which is crazy because I’m 19. So what do you want me to do? Women never get a break. So I’m super proud of being a female artist in Nigeria. And I’m super proud of every female artist in Nigeria because it takes a lot [to be one]. It’s not easy.”
