Omowunmi Cynthia, the widow of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, pushed back against a directive from the Aloba family over the use of their surname.
Naijaonpoint understands that the dispute began when the Aloba family, led by the family head, Omolayo Aloba, and the late singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, released a statement in Lagos on 13 November 2025.
They announced that Omowunmi should stop using the Aloba surname until a court-ordered DNA test confirms the paternity of her son, Liam.
The family insisted that no traditional or statutory marriage existed between her and the late singer because the full Yoruba rites were not carried out.
They also named three administrators to oversee Mohbad’s estate and said recognition of both mother and child would depend on the DNA result.
Hours after the statement went out, Omowunmi reacted online.
She posted on Instagram that same day and boldly attached the Aloba name to her profile again, making it clear she would continue to use it.
She also mentioned her son while urging people to support her small business.
She wrote: “Please patronize Wunmi Aloba oo, Liam Aloba needs to be taken care of.”
Naijaonpoint reports that her lawyer Kabir Akingbolu, has condemned the directive.
He argued that the law protects her right to use the name since it was given to her by her late husband.
He referred to a past Supreme Court ruling that allows any lawful holder of a name to keep using it.
He also said that the widow has never avoided the DNA test and insisted that she remains ready for it at any time.
