Apple has announced that its World Wide Developer Conference will take place from June 10 through June 14 at Apple Park in Cupertino, California. Again this year, Apple is making the event available entirely online, and available to all developers for free. It’s likely that there will be a small in-person audience at Apple Park if there is hardware being announced.

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about WWDC, including what it is, what will be announced, and so much more.

What is WWDC?

WWDC stands for World Wide Developer Conference, which is Apple’s annual developer’s conference that it has held since 1987. It has been held in various venues across the Bay Area since its inception in 1987. Starting out at the Santa Clara Convention Center, then moving to the San Jose Convention Center, and then the Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco. It went back to the San Jose Convention Center in 2017 up until the pandemic in 2020 shut it all down.

Now, WWDC is held at Apple Park. And it’s really just the keynote that kicks off the conference, with all the sessions being available online, and filmed ahead of time.

Typically, at WWDC, Apple will announce the next versions of each software platform that it has. And sometimes we will see some new hardware. It is quite common to see new hardware, but it doesn’t happen every single year. So do keep that in mind here.

Remember that WWDC is a developer’s conference, so they do announce quite a few things specifically for developers. This is where Apple is able to court developers to get them to develop for their platform. And also provide new tools to make that job easier. As well as making money from it.

When is WWDC 2024?

As it has been for the past many years, WWDC is taking place the second week of June. That’ll be June 10-14, 2024.

It’ll take place at Apple Park, similar to 2022 and 2023. It’s really just the keynote that will be at Apple Park as the sessions will all be virtual. The good thing here is that developers don’t have to scramble to get tickets and pay $1,599 to attend. Instead, it’s free to everyone.

What announcements are expected at WWDC 2024?

There are some things that we know will be announced at WWDC 2023, like iOS 18 and iPad OS 18. But there are also a few surprises that many are expecting to see. So that’s what we’ll go over here.

iOS 18 and iPadOS 18

iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 are definitely going to be announced at WWDC in June. There are plenty of rumors for both mobile operating systems, and they include plenty of AI. But iOS 18 is also supposed to bring some pretty massive changes to the home screen. We aren’t entirely sure what that really means just yet. But icons are expected to remain locked to an invisible grid. However, some are hoping for an update that will allow blank rows and columns or spaces between apps.

Apple will also be bringing RCS to iOS 18 this year, thanks to the EU and the Digital Markets Act. This was already announced in late 2023 actually, so this part is not a rumor. This would make texting back and forth with non-iPhone users much easier.

On the AI front, it’s expected that Apple will catch up to its competitors with iOS 18. Recently, it was reported that Apple and Google are partnering up to use Gemini’s AI models in iOS 18. That could mean we see a lot of similar features to what we have on Android these days.

There are a number of other features that we are expecting to see from recent rumors. These include:

  • Mood-based playlists in Apple Music crafted by AI.
  • AI could help you craft compelling writing in Pages.
  • Keynote presentations get an AI-powered boost.
  • Code faster with AI assistance in Xcode.
  • Discover what you need with an enhanced Spotlight search.
  • Experience a smarter Siri with advanced conversational AI.
  • Siri simplifies your Messages with suggested responses.
  • Automate everyday tasks with Siri-powered Shortcuts.

macOS 15

macOS 15 will also be announced at WWDC, as it is every year. There are not many rumors about macOS 15 just yet, but we would expect to see plenty of AI features being added. Especially when it comes to Apple’s core apps like Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.

Apple is still using California landmarks for the name of each macOS version. Here are a few names that Apple could use for macOS 15: Redwood, Grizzly, Sequoia, Mammoth, Pacific, Rincon, Farallon, Miramar, Condor, Diablo, and Shasta. There will be plenty of speculation ahead of the announcement, but we won’t know for sure until June 10, when the keynote happens.

Other updates

We’re still about two and a half months out from WWDC, so there’s not a lot of rumors about the other announcements yet, nor hardware. But we do know for sure that we will see tvOS 18, visionOS 2, and watchOS 11 debut at WWDC.

As far as hardware goes, at this point, we could see the new iPad Pro and iPad Air debut at WWDC. Those were supposedly set to be announced in March, but so far that has not happened. And it’s not likely to happen after mid-April. Typically, everything else around mid-April that is ready to go, gets saved for WWDC. So we’ll have to keep a lookout on that.

But, Apple does typically announce new Macs at WWDC. So it’s possible that we could also see new M3 versions of the Mac Studio and Mac Pro announced.
