Many fans were surprised when fan-favorite mutant Doug Ramsey was turned into Revelation, and one of the biggest questions surrounding the hero-turned-villain was what makes him so powerful. X-Men: Age of Revelation Overture #1 offers a brief answer, one that teases greater exploration as the crossover progresses. In short, Revelation possesses unparalleled powers of control.
As Magneto explains:
[Revelation’s] words can control the minds of those who hear them. With his Choristers increasing his power, he can speak even to the cells of living things.
In other words, Revelation’s abilities now seem to far exceed even the most powerful Omega-level mutant telepaths, such as Charles Xavier or Emma Frost. Further, it introduces a totally new take on the classic conception of “mind control” for the X-franchise to play with as Age of Revelation continues, and beyond.
The “Choristers” Magneto mentions are mutant servants of Revelation who use their powers to amplify his, a concept that in itself was largely unexplored in X-Men lore even a decade ago, but has now become a common element of the franchise. Though there’s still much more to learn, Revelation’s new “body control” ability could be the next big upgrade to mutant mythology.

There are, of course, some precedents for Revelation’s “body control” power in X-Men history. Some mutants can manipulate others using pheromones, for example, while the notorious X-villain Sublime is a sentient strain of bacteria that infects and takes over its hosts. At the same time, Revelation’s version feels novel, and more importantly, honors Doug Ramsey’s power in a fascinating way.
Before his Revelation transformation, Doug’s mutant powers gave him near-total mastery over languages. Human languages, animal communication, alien tongues, machine-speak, and more. As Revelation, Doug has now learned the language of the cells that comprise people’s bodies. It is a shocking, and exciting, upgrade for the character, one that mollifies fans’ concerns that his original abilities were being abandoned.
Instead, X-Men: Age of Revelation Overture #1 confirms that Revelation’s linguistic powers are more important than ever. Except in this dark future, he has weaponized them, becoming more than just a master of languages, but a master of rhetoric, so powerful that it can ensnare the minds of powerful X-Men heroes like Wolverine, Storm, and Psylocke.
