The immediate past Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party in Kano State, Hashimu Dungurawa, has appealed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to shelve his planned defection to the All Progressives Congress.
Dungurawa, in an interview with Daily Post on Sunday, warned that while Yusuf’s second-term bid is assured on the NNPP platform, the political terrain may be hostile should he move to the APC.
“It is still my prayer that the governor doesn’t leave our party because leaving the party will cause a lot of vacuum that will be difficult to fill,” he said.
The former party chairman argued that the APC environment would not favour the governor politically, describing it as a gathering of adversaries.
Dungurawa said, “Staying with NNPP will help him because where he is going is a camp of his enemies.
“We are here supporting him in the NNPP. Nobody is fighting him and there is nobody that is not wishing him well.”
He insisted that Yusuf’s return for a second term would be seamless if he remained with the NNPP.
“If he remains in our party, he will automatically return as governor for his second term. There is no clear road in where he is going, so the best thing for him is to remain with us,” he added.
Dungurawa further pledged the party’s collective backing for the governor’s re-election, insisting that NNPP remains formidable in Kano.
“Definitely, we will all work for his victory in 2027 if he remains in our party. I don’t see any reason why he should be jumping to another party when he is comfortable where he is.
“In 2027, NNPP is going to defeat the so-called APC and PDP in Kano State,” he declared.
The governor has also come under intense pressure from supporters of the NNPP national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, popularly known as the Kwankwasiyya Movement, who are reportedly working to halt any alliance between Yusuf and the APC.
Sources indicated that the group has warned of political consequences in 2027 should the governor ignore their advice.
