Zack Snyder's Jungle Thriller The Last Photograph First Look Revealed

Zack Snyder reveals the first look at his new jungle thriller, The Last Photograph, with two Rebel Moon stars. Snyder’s space opera was released in two parts on Netflix, subtitled A Child of Fire (2023) and The Scargiver (2024), which were excoriated by critics with terrible 22% and 16% scores on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively, but were nevertheless popular on the streaming service.

The director’s next project is The Last Photograph, which has been in development since the mid-2000s and was officially greenlit in August 2025 with Rebel Moon stars Stuart Martin and Fra Free joining the cast. Now, on Instagram, Zack Snyder shared the first behind-the-scenes look at The Last Photograph.

The photo shows Snyder himself serving as the cinematographer, crouching on a box, filming two dirt-covered actors in an intense scene set in the Amazon jungle. Snyder captioned the photo, “All you really need to make a movie is a box, a camera, and the Amazon.” Check out his post below:

Directed by Zack Snyder, with a script written by Kurt Johnstad (who co-wrote Rebel Moon), The Last Photograph follows a former DEA agent who ventures into the mountains of South America to find his missing niece and nephew after the murder of their parents. Guided by a war photographer who saw the killers in action, he must face his own past as their journey increasingly blurs the line between reality and the surreal.

The Last Photograph reunites Snyder with Stuart Martin, who played Den, a farmer and hunter, and Fra Free, who played Balisarius, the Imperium commander and regent of the Motherworld​​​​​, in both Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire and Part Two: The Scargiver.

The Last Photograph is a passion project for Snyder, which he has been working on since the mid-2000s. Christian Bale and Sean Penn were originally set to star in 2011, but both have since exited the project.

After the sprawling spectacle of Rebel Moon, Snyder seems to be shifting away from the grandiosity that has defined his recent work. The Last Photograph appears to embrace intimacy over visual spectacle, focusing on raw performances and grounded storytelling, suggesting a more restrained approach for Snyder after years of excess.

With no studio attached yet, The Last Photograph represents both risk and reinvention for Snyder. Moving away from epic space opera to a tense jungle thriller, the director can prove once again that he can deliver tension and emotion without the effects-laden grandeur that has long defined his career.
