Zamfara community guards kill eight bandits in ambush

Local security volunteers scored a major success against armed groups on Monday evening when they confronted suspected bandits near Mada in Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

According to community sources, members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guards spotted a group of roughly ten men riding motorcycles.

The riders appeared to be heading back toward forest camps after an earlier attempt to strike civilians.

The guards moved into position and opened fire, sparking a brief but intense exchange.

Eight of the suspects died at the scene. Two others managed to flee into the surrounding bush. No casualties were reported among the Community Protection Guards.

“We heard the gunfire and later learned our boys had stopped the attackers before they could reach safety,” said Mallam Ibrahim, a resident of a nearby village. “Their quick action saved lives.”

The clash underscores the expanding contribution of community-based units working alongside conventional forces.

In recent months these local formations have increasingly disrupted the movement of criminal gangs that have long terrorized rural parts of the state.

“Our mandate is simple: protect our people and deny these criminals free passage,” a senior CPG coordinator told local reporters. “When we receive credible information, we respond without delay.”

Villagers have expressed relief and gratitude for the operation. Many noted that the presence of trained local guards has restored a measure of confidence in areas once considered highly vulnerable.

Meanwhile, state security agencies continue coordinated sweeps across Zamfara, targeting hideouts and supply routes used by bandit networks.

Officials say the pressure will remain high until communities can farm, travel, and live without constant fear of attack.
