Zombieland 3's Intended Release Window Revealed By OG Director

A potential timeline for Zombieland 3 has been revealed. The previous two horror-comedy movies, which were both directed by Ruben Fleischer, starred Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin as survivors of the zombie apocalypse. While the movies have cumulatively grossed more than $225 million worldwide, the possible Zombieland 3 has not yet been announced.

Ruben Fleischer recently spoke with Deadline while promoting his new movie, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. While discussing his career as a whole, Fleischer shared thatI’m hoping that we’ll do a Zombieland 3 in 2029.

While the project has not officially come together, the fact that the original Zombieland debuted in 2009 and its sequel debuted in 2019 means that Fleischer wants to continue the pattern of releasing a new installment every 10 years. Read the filmmaker’s full quote below:

I’m hoping that we’ll do a Zombieland 3 in 2029. We’re starting to talk about that because [the first] one was 2009, and then we did the second one in 2019, and we kind of left that one all saying, “We’ll see you in 10 years.” That’s coming up now, and so we’re starting to figure that out, so I’m hoping that’ll come together. Then, I’ve got a few things that are raring to go, so we’ll see which one comes first.

While it is far from a guarantee that Zombieland 3 will come to fruition, Fleischer is one of several members of the cast and crew who has expressed interest in making another sequel to the 2009 zombie comedy movie. This includes Emma Stone (according to a previous comment from Fleischer) and Zoey Deutch (who joined the franchise in Double Tap).

However, as Fleischer mentions, he has a busy schedule for the next few years. For instance, he has been attached to direct the upcoming Now You See Me 4, which was revealed to be in the works in an announcement made ahead of the release of the new installment.

As a producer, he is also attached to two comedy movies that are currently in pre-production, namely the Mila Kunis vehicle The 47 Night Stand and the John Cena project Little Brother. His core cast, all of whom are either Oscar nominees or Oscar winners, have similarly tight schedules.

Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson have their schedules impacted by the same project as Fleischer, as both could potentially return to reprise their original roles in Fleischer’s Now You See Me 4.

Additionally, Eisenberg is in post-production on a musical starring Julianne Moore (which he directed) and Harrelson is attached to a number of projects, including the Bob Dylan musical Girl From the North Country and the movie Full Phil, in which he and Kristen Stewart play father and daughter.

With so many potential scheduling issues cropping up, the future of Zombieland 3 is still in significant doubt. However, considering the fact that there are still four years between the time of writing and 2029, it is possible that Fleischer and the cast have enough advanced warning to clear a space in their schedules for production on the sequel.
