Tragedy struck in Kwale County, Kenya, on Tuesday morning as a light aircraft carrying at least 12 people crashed shortly after take-off. The plane, registered 5Y-CCA, was en route from Diani to Kichwa Tembo in the Maasai Mara when it went down around 5:30 a.m. (0530Z).
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed the incident in a statement titled “Aircraft Accident”, disclosing that government agencies had already arrived at the site to begin investigations.
“The aircraft had 12 persons on board. Government agencies are already on site to establish the cause of the accident and its impact,” the KCAA said.
While the exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined, early reports suggest that poor visibility may have contributed to the tragedy.
According to local media, the coastal region was heavily covered in fog and low clouds on Tuesday morning, raising concerns that the pilot may have lost control due to unfavourable weather conditions.
Sources cited by Kenyans.co.ke said investigators were exploring weather-related complications as a key factor.
Police authorities revealed that all 12 passengers were tourists, though their nationalities are yet to be officially disclosed. No survivors had been rescued at press time, according to a report by Kenya Times.
Confirming the development, KCAA Director, Emile N. Rao, said relevant agencies were already on site to conduct an extensive investigation into the crash.
He assured that a full probe would determine both the cause and broader impact of the accident, noting that further details would be released as rescue and investigation efforts progress.
