A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Friday, announced Senator Mao Ohuabunwa as the chairman of the party’s reconstituted Board of Trustees (BoT).

It also announced Isah Dansidi as the Secretary of the newly constituted Board of Trustees, replacing former Kaduna governor Ahmed Makarfi.

As earlier reported by Naijaonpoint, the faction announced the dissolution of the party’s Board of Trustees led by former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara.

The announcement came during a meeting held at Wike’s Life Camp residence in Abuja, where the factional Acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Muhammad, inaugurated a new BoT.

Speaking before the meeting went into a closed session, Muhammad said the dissolution was necessary to restore constitutional order and moral direction within the party.

He accused the Wabara-led BoT of losing the “moral balance expected of that noble institution,” insisting that Wabara’s alleged suspension by the Abia State PDP for anti-party activities made his continued leadership “untenable.”

Below are some things to know about the new PDP factional BoT Chairman.

1. Mao Ohuabunwa was born on May 24, 1957 in Port Harcourt to parents from Atani in Arochukwu, Abia State.

2. He earned a degree in Applied Biology from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology in 1982.

3. He set up a medical laboratory and later founded St. Marsons Diagnostic Limited a chain of diagnostic centres with branches across Yola, Jalingo, Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Abuja.

4. In 1998, he contested for a seat in the House of Representatives under the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) before the process was cut short by political upheaval. Again in 1999, this time under the PDP, he contested and won, becoming the first person to represent both Arochukwu and Ohafia constituencies in the National Assembly.

5. During his two terms in the House (1999–2007), Ohuabunwa rose to become Deputy Leader and led the South-East caucus.

6. He also served as chairman of the Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Security Committee at the ECOWAS Parliament between 2001 and 2003, and later as treasurer from 2004 to 2007.

7. In 2015, Ohuabunwa won the Abia North senatorial seat under the PDP.

8. However, in 2019, he lost his seat in the Senate to former Abia governor Orji Uzor Kalu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

9. Ohuabunwa holds multiple degrees, including a Master’s in Human Resource Management from Rivers State University and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

10. In July 2024, he was appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt.

11. The politician is also a Knight of Saint Christopher in the Anglican Communion.

12. He was married to Nimi Faith, with whom he has children. She died on July 22 2023.
