Former Greek Super League champions AEK Athens are plotting a summer swoop for Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers, Soccernet.ng reports.

With the summer transfer window fast approaching, the speculations about Dessers’ future have started.

In the last two summer transfer windows, there were a lot of talks linking him with an exit from Rangers. And the reason is not far-fetched, as it is easy to believe that he is not comfortable at Rangers due to the constant criticisms he has gotten from sections of the fans.

Nonetheless, Dessers has been supplying goals for Rangers consistently for the past two seasons. The 30-year-old striker has contributed 50 goals and 16 assists in 108 appearances for the Gers.

Now, in a new development, per the Scottish Sun Sport, AEK Athens are looking to bid for Dessers as he is their main target in the summer.

The 13-time Greek Super League champions have lost the title to Olympiacos this season. They were also knocked out of the Greek Cup in the semifinal and failed to make the UEFA Conference League group stage.

Due to their disappointing campaign, AEK Athens want to get Dessers to give them a boost next season.

Should Cyriel Dessers join AEK Athens?

AEK Athens would need at least €4 million to pry Cyriel Dessers away from Rangers, as the Nigerian striker still has two years left on his contract.

Moving to Greece would be a slight step down for Dessers, but it is a move that will give him an opportunity to start afresh and possibly build a big reputation in Greece’s capital.

However, the Super Eagles star recently noted that he wants to stay at Rangers and win trophies.

“I’m very keen. I came here two summers ago with the ambition to fight for trophies, to win trophies,” Dessers said in April.

“I’m sitting here, we had two amazing runs in Europe, but we only won a trophy, and I don’t think that’s enough.

“I’m really hungry to win more trophies, more silver at this club. So, for me, I’m very keen. But obviously, like I say, there’s going to be a lot happening, but I’m looking forward to that as well.”

Nonetheless, Dessers is already on the other side of 30, and his next destination could be decided by the money on the table. If AEK Athens table an enticing offer, Dessers could be on his way out of Glasgow.
