The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has cautioned farmers and residents of the country against assuming that the 2026 rainy season has commenced.
NIMET, through its Director of Weather Services, Prof. Vincent Weli, explained that the recent scattered showers in parts of the country are “pseudo rains,” predicting they will dissipate within two weeks, potentially followed by a prolonged dry spell.

The agency warned farmers and other members of the public not to be misled by the scattered showers, or assume that the rainy season had arrived prematurely.
Prof. Weli, advised farmers to hold off on planting to avoid devastating losses.
In addition to agricultural risks, the agency highlighted potential health dangers associated with the current showers of rain, warning that people in areas where it is raining are advised not to consume the rainwater, as it may pose health risks.
