The Federal Government has introduced a broad set of education reform initiatives aimed at empowering teachers, improving learning outcomes, and restoring dignity to the teaching profession.
The reforms were unveiled on Tuesday at the Nigeria Teachers’ Summit 2026 held in Abuja, with the theme “Empowering Teachers, Strengthening the System: A National Agenda for Education Transformation and Sustainability.”
Speaking at the summit, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said the success of Nigeria’s education system and its overall development depends largely on the quality, motivation, and professional support available to teachers.
“Teachers are the foundationof education, and education is the foundation of national development. No reform, no matter how well designed, can succeed unless teachers are empowered, motivated, supported, and respected,” Alausa said.
As part of the reforms, the minister announced the launch of EduRevamp, a nationwide Continuous Professional Development programme designed to modernise teacher training and link performance-based incentives to measurable classroom outcomes.
“Empowering teachers means continuous professional development that reflects our realities. It means dignity in service, clarity in career progression, and fairness in reward. In pursuit of this vision, today marks another major milestone with the launch of EduRevamp,” he stated.
Alausa explained that the programme aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda and global best practices, with a strong focus on improving teaching and learning across classrooms nationwide. He added that EduRevamp is open to teachers in both public and private schools, although performance-based incentives under the scheme will be reserved for public school teachers in line with accountability and equity principles.
Other initiatives announced include the Ignite digital platform to reduce teachers’ workload, the Diaspora Bridge programme to strengthen STEMM education, and the distribution of 60,000 tablets to teachers in underserved communities.
The minister also disclosed reforms to the Teachers Registration Council’s digital platform, the expansion of Communities of Practice, and progress on the Accelerated Teacher Training Programme, which is aimed at fast-tracking the professionalisation of in-service teachers. According to him, all the initiatives are anchored on a newly introduced National Teacher Policy to guide teacher welfare, standards, and professional development nationwide.
In her remarks, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, described the summit as timely and strategic, stressing that the quality of any education system is inseparable from the quality and motivation of its teachers.
“Empowering teachers is not an isolated intervention; it is the foundation upon which sustainable education reform is built. When teachers are supported, trained, motivated, and valued, the entire system is strengthened and learning outcomes improve,” she said.
Also speaking at the event, the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, described the summit’s theme as timely and relevant, noting that teachers play a central role in shaping young minds and driving national development. She said meaningful education reform can only be achieved when teachers are adequately equipped, motivated,and supported.
The National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Audi Amba, described the summit as a historic milestone in recognising teachers’ contributions to national development.
As part of the event, the Federal Government honoured 12 outstanding teachers with national prizes of ₦25 million each. The overall Best Teacher of the Year, Solanke Taiwo, received an additional ₦25 million, a brand-new car, and a fully furnished two-bedroom flat.
Nigeria’s education sector continues to face challenges such as teacher welfare, access to professional development, classroom capacity, and infrastructure deficits, issues that stakeholders say must be addressed to improve the quality of teaching and learning in public schools.
