The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that applications for registration of new political parties are currently at 144.

The electoral body said that it received an additional 10 letters of intent from groups and individuals seeking to register new political parties with INEC.

The commission also stated that its newly developed party registration portal has been deployed after successful internal testing and approval.

Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee made these disclosures in a statement issued on behalf of INEC on Thursday.

According to Olumekun, INEC is revising all the applications submitted to the commission.

He said the commision review process aims to ascertain which association meets the criteria for the advancement of the formal application process.

“In our last press release, we assured Nigerians that we were finalising the necessary tests on the party registration portal designed and built in-house by our ICT officials.

“As is the case with all our IT innovations, the new portal has been demonstrated before the commission and approved for deployment,” Olumekun said.

He addition, he said the new applications including the names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leadership of the groups, have been published on the INEC’s website.
