2027 Election: Ex-Kano Gov, Shekarau-led Group Plans To Form New Party To Challenge APC, PDP

A new political party championed by former Governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, is likely to emerge before the next general elections in 2027

Reports obtained by Naijaonpoint revealed that the League of Northern Democrats (LND), led by Shekarau, is making moves to establish a political party to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the coming polls.

The League has also criticized APC and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for their perceived failures to address the needs of Nigerians in the past years in governance.

It seeks collaboration with political pressure groups in the South to establish a robust political entity.

The National Convener of LND, Dr. Umar Ardo, stated in a recent announcement that the LND symbolizes a source of hope for a nation facing significant challenges, emphasizing its foundation in democratic principles and dedication to institutional reform.

He highlighted the multitude of issues afflicting Nigeria, such as widespread poverty, insecurity, inequality, institutional deterioration, corruption, and economic stagnation, attributing these problems to ineffective governance.

Ardo noted that the decision to transition into a political party was influenced by the recent New Year message from the former national vice chairman (North West) of the APC, Salihu Mohammed Lukman, which criticized the systemic failures of Nigeria’s political framework, particularly the entrenched undemocratic practices and mediocrity within both the APC and PDP.

He said, “This clarion call resonates deeply with the aspirations of many Nigerians yearning for a break from the vicious cycle of ineffectual governance of the PDP and APC, and especially among northerners.”

Nigerians Will Still Vote For Us – APC Boasts

The APC Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, responded to the development by asserting that the group’s transition into a political party will not jeopardize the APC’s prospects in the 2027 elections.

He further characterized the accusations directed at the party as unfounded, emphasizing that the party’s policies and programs are already producing favourable outcomes.

“It is not a threat to our party. The people are the final judges. Let them come on board and let’s see. What we want is a level playing field. They will campaign and sell their manifesto.

“But we have the best agenda for Nigeria. We have the best policies and programmes that will benefit Nigerians. Our policies will yield positive results before 2027 and Nigerians will re-elect our party,” Ibrahim said in a statement on Monday, January 6.
