The former Labour Party (LP) 2023 gubernatorial candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has stated that the party lacks the potential to replicate or surpass its performance during the last election.

Naijaonpoint reports that Rhodes-Vivour made this known during an interview with Punch, noting that the party has suffered some significant challenges.

Rhodes-Vivour cited the controversy in the Supreme Court judgement on the different factions of the party, stressing that a lot of damage has been done to the party.

Asked if the LP have the potential to replicate or surpass its performance in the 2023 general elections, Rhodes-Vivour said, “No. That is because the party has suffered some major challenges. The first is the problem between people; the party would have built on the grace and the favour that it got in the last election. Instead, they spent so much time in court among themselves.

“They would have built a robust structure, which is what they were lacking in the last election. The last general election was saved primarily by the supporters of Peter Obi. Anybody who says otherwise is just lying. It was done by ordinary Nigerians who chose a change agent and wanted a change.

“The second problem with the LP is that the Supreme Court gave a judgment, and it is neither here nor there. This is confusing. Before the Supreme Court judgment, it was usually two people who would contest primaries to take a position.

“In the last local government election in Lagos, four different groups submitted four different names. A house divided against itself cannot stand. A lot of damage has been done to the party in terms of the back and forth.”
