The Obidient Movement has dismissed claims suggesting that 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is in alliance talks with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2027 general elections.
National Coordinator of the movement, Yunusa Tanko, stated that there is no agreement or political pact between Obi and Jonathan to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
His clarification follows growing speculation that Jonathan may contest the next presidential election, with rumours linking him to a possible return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or a move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Jonathan was recently reported to have met with ADC National Chairman, David Mark, party spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi, and other key figures of the party in Abuja.
Similarly, Obi’s 2027 political direction remains unclear. Though still a full member of the Labour Party (LP), he is also part of an opposition coalition that adopted the ADC.
The speculations intensified after a closed-door meeting between Jonathan and Obi, which some interpreted as a sign of a possible political alliance.
However, Tanko dismissed such assumptions, explaining that the meeting was merely a friendly discussion between two leaders who share mutual respect and a common interest in Nigeria’s progress.
He said, “My principal and the former president have a very good working relationship, and they know each other very well. So seeing them talk to each other does not mean anything beyond that.
“It should not be translated to mean anything other than a platonic discussion on how to move this country forward.
“There was no talk about 2027. Even when they met in Ghana, I was there. There was nothing like that,” Tanko added.
