The Archbishop of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province and Bishop of Ibadan North (Anglican) Diocese, Right Reverend Williams Aladekugbe, has condemned what he described as a desperation showcased by some politicians ahead of the 2027 general election.
Aladekugbe said that any politician promising Nigerians that he would govern for one term – four years – is only desperate for the position.
According to the Archbishop, such a plan would not work in Nigeria or with any politician across the country.
The cleric made this assertion while delivering a sermon at the final farewell service of the late Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
He condemned efforts by politicians who appear humble to the electorate by serving food at parties but fail at delivering good governance to the people.
“Let me say that any politician bargaining for only one term is a sign of desperation. It will not work. It is also a sign of desperation when you see leaders in their own right carrying plates, serving food at parties. All these will not work,” Aladekugbe said.
Further calling on politicians to focus on doing the job which they’ve been elected to do, the cleric said the level of poverty and hardship across the country is worrisome.
He also expressed concerns over the abandonment of governance by leaders who now concentrate on the 2027 general election which is still two years ahead.
He said, “It is very disturbing that while our government needed to settle and address the myriad of problems facing our country, some politicians have been talking about 2027. This is a disgrace to governance, abuse of the people’s mandate and reckless disregard for the concerns of the people.
“As far back as less than two years of President Tinubu in office, shameless politicians have been talking about 2027 instead of focusing on the delivery of good governance. And now it is even worse,” he added.
