WATCH THE VIDEO HERE THE 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has firmly rejected any possibility of a merger or alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or any other party ahead of the 2027 elections. Adebayo made this statement today during a meeting with the SDP state executive members in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. Accompanying him were former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung and the party’s chairpersons from Ogun, Oyo, and Lagos states. Addressing speculations that the SDP is aligned with the APC, Adebayo dismissed such claims, emphasizing that his party remains independent and committed to the welfare of Nigerians. “Maybe APC has appendicitis; they should go to the hospital to treat it. We are a strong party, older than any of the existing parties. Our mission is clear—we are not in government with them. I led the party in the last election, and I am still here. I am not a minister under Tinubu. Our National Chairman, National Secretary, and all State Chairmen are intact. We stand on our own,” he stated. Adebayo highlighted that the SDP avoids political mudslinging, focusing instead on intellectual discourse. He positioned the party as “a little to the left”, advocating policies aligned with social welfare, including education, housing, healthcare, and infrastructure development. “Nigeria’s problems can only be solved through a leftist approach. Chapter Two of the Constitution mandates investment in education, housing, healthcare, and infrastructure to provide Nigerians with a better quality of life, as Chief Obafemi Awolowo envisioned,” he said. When asked about potential collaborations, Adebayo reiterated that while the SDP welcomes new members, they must align with the party’s core values of justice and progress. “As white as the horse in our logo is, so is our heart. We want Nigerians to reclaim the vision that MKO Abiola promised—a farewell to poverty. Abiola sacrificed his life for this vision, and anyone joining the SDP must be ready to make similar sacrifices,” he stressed. He clarified that the party is not interested in working with individuals of questionable character and remains dedicated to the common people rather than political elites. “We are merging with the Nigerian people. You cannot claim to support the poor while aligning with those who oppress them. SDP stands firmly with the people,” Adebayo affirmed. Meanwhile, the Ogun State SDP chairman, Ola Williams, used the opportunity to welcome new members who share the party’s vision.
