A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Umar Sani, has asserted that former President, Goodluck Jonathan, will affect President Bola Tinubu’s return in the 2027 election.
Naijaonpoint reports that Sani made this known during an interview on Channels Television, stating that Jonathan will enjoy massive support from the South-South, unlike Tinubu.
According to Sani, President Tinubu is preparing South-South states for himself, but Jonathan’s decision to contest for the presidency will upstage his effort because the people cannot sacrifice their ‘son’ for any other consideration.
He said, “The Return of former President Goodluck Jonathan would further affect the President’s chances at a second term. For instance, the President is now preparing the South-South. He’s preparing these states (Edo, Akwa Ibom, Delta and Rivers) for himself. The coming of Jonathan will upstage his efforts, as the south-south will rally strongly to support him. Being that Goodluck Jonathan is from South-South, the support from there will be very massive. They will come out enmass because this is their own son. They simply cannot sacrifice their own son for any other consideration. It will affect Tinubu more than it will affect any other candidate.”
Sani further stated that Goodluck Jonathan will gain the support of the Northerners, stressing that the Boko Haram insurgency made him unpopular during the 2015 election when the late former President, Muhammadu Buhari, defeated him.
He added, “Then coming to the north which is the battle ground, Goodluck Jonathan is a popular person in the north. He was unpopular in the north earlier because of the Boko Haram insurgency, and most northerners believed he was behind Boko Haram.
“However, on the assumption of Muhammadu Buhari and his lack of performance, the people began to realise that it was not Jonathan’s fault, but rather an issue that had been ongoing even before his tenure, as Buhari repeatedly claimed to be technically defeated or almost defeated, yet the insurgency persisted. The incident that broke Carmel’s back was when Bello Turji burnt some people alive in a bus, and the northerners could not take it.”
