24 Killed in Zimbabwe Bus-Truck Collision Near Beitbridge

According to police spokesperson Paul Nyathi, the bus was traveling from Harare to Beitbridge with 65 passengers when it attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with the truck. Authorities are still determining the exact number of injured victims.

State media reports indicate that 17 people died on the scene, while seven others succumbed to severe head injuries at a hospital in Beitbridge. Around 30 people were injured and are receiving medical treatment.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed his heartbreak over the tragedy, declaring the crash a national disaster. He assured the public that the government would cover funeral and burial expenses.

“Our nation does not deserve this at all, let alone experiencing such a bloody incident at the beginning of the year,” Mnangagwa said, urging drivers to exercise extreme caution on the roads.

Road accidents involving buses are common in Zimbabwe, often due to speeding and poor road conditions. The highway where the crash occurred was recently resurfaced as part of government efforts to improve infrastructure.

Authorities have urged motorists to adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies.
