WATCH THE VIDEO HERE THE Nigeria Police Force has clarified that the 3,907 unaccounted firearms reported in the Auditor-General’s assessment date back to 2019, long before Kayode Egbetokun assumed office as Inspector General of Police (IGP). The Force spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi explained that many of these arms were carted away by hoodlums during various civil unrests, with some police officers killed and their weapons taken. He emphasised that while some arms were lost during attacks on police facilities and armouries, significant efforts have been made to trace and recover them. Adejobi further noted that when auditors inspect police armouries, they may not find all weapons present at the time because some have been issued to personnel who are away on operations that may last for months. He argued that such situations could lead to misconceptions about the accuracy of audit reports. The police reaffirmed their commitment to transparency and accountability, insisting that recovery efforts are ongoing and that many of the unaccounted firearms have already been retrieved and returned to police armouries.
