The Lagos State command of the Nigeria Police Force says it has intensified security presence across the state, including schools, places of worship, markets and other public areas, as part of measures to curb rising insecurity nationwide.
This comes as the Command confirmed the arrest of 56 suspects linked to various criminal activities within the metropolis.
Recent weeks have seen heightened tensions across the country, with Boko Haram attacks in Borno and increased banditry in states such as Niger, Kwara and Kebbi.
Speaking on Monday at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja, the Commissioner of Police, Olorundare Jimoh, said the deployment forms part of a broader strategy to ensure the safety of lives and property as the year winds down.
Jimoh disclosed that officers had been stationed at critical locations, including worship centres, markets, recreational spots and major highways.
He stressed that the aim is to guarantee a crime-free festive season for residents.
Assuring Lagosians of the Command’s readiness, Jimoh insisted that the security situation in Lagos remains stable.
“The security situation in Lagos is not alarming and we are firmly on top of the situation,” he said.“There has not been any extraordinary or significant security problem throughout the bigger city, and this is due not only to police effort but to the collaboration and support of the public.”
The CP added that all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Squads and Unit Commanders had been directed to reinforce security at worship centres during services.
Jimoh explained that intensified intelligence and surveillance had begun yielding results. Within the review period, the Command recovered ten stolen vehicles, several of which were taken away by drivers and carwash attendants.
He added that suspects were arrested for offences including armed robbery, conspiracy, kidnapping, assault, stealing, and threats to life.
The CP further disclosed the recovery of multiple firearms and dangerous weapons across November operations.
“Across multiple operations in November, the Command recovered six firearms, including locally made pistols, cut-to-size guns, a single cut-to-size barrel gun, multiple live cartridges, dangerous weapons such as a machete, a battle axe, and an assault dagger,” he said.
He added that officers also seized Nigerian military camouflage, charms, and fake currency valued at 4,000 USD.
Jimoh emphasised that these successes were part of a deliberate November strategy: “These achievements are a testament to our sustained strategy aimed at dismantling criminal gangs, intercepting stolen property, removing illegal firearms from circulation, and strengthening public safety across Lagos State.”
The CP revealed that the total items recovered included a machete, battle axe, assault dagger, military camouflage, charm and fake $4,000.
He said the seizures were made during intelligence-driven raids targeted at criminal gangs known for violent attacks in different parts of the state.
“The recovery of these weapons and materials significantly disrupts the capabilities of criminal groups and enhances the overall security landscape of the state,” Jimoh added.
