THE Abia State Government has announced that demolition and reconstruction work will begin this week at the Abia State College of Health Sciences and Management Technology, Aba, as part of its broader effort to revamp state-owned tertiary institutions.
The disclosure was made in a statement issued today by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alex Otti, Njoku Ukoha.
According to the statement, most of the college’s buildings—many of which are more than 70 years old and described as severely dilapidated—will be demolished and rebuilt to create a more conducive learning environment for students.
Ukoha said the intervention aligns with Governor Otti’s commitment to rehabilitating and modernising all public tertiary institutions in the state, noting that years of neglect had left the college in poor condition.
He added that visual prototypes of the proposed new structures have been released to give the public an insight into what the institution will look like upon completion.
The statement also highlighted ongoing reforms across other state-owned institutions.
The Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu, was described as fully transformed, while Abia State University, Uturu, is undergoing extensive rehabilitation, reconstruction, and new construction works.
Similarly, Ukoha noted that Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, has seen significant improvements at its temporary site, with major construction underway at its permanent location ahead of relocation.
He added that the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba, is also currently undergoing large-scale construction and upgrades.
According to the state government, the redevelopment of the College of Health Sciences forms part of a wider strategy to reverse long-standing neglect in the education sector and reposition public institutions for improved academic standards and service delivery.
