The Labour Party has declared illegal a meeting held on Friday, July 18, 2025, by suspended members claiming to be the party’s National Executive Committee.
The party made this known in a statement signed by its National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim.
The party stated that the gathering has no legal backing and its outcome will not be recognized.
According to the party, the meeting was convened without following the due process outlined in its constitution, Naijaonpoint reports.
Only the National Secretary, in agreement with the National Chairman, has the right to call a NEC meeting.
The party maintained that this provision was ignored by the group loyal to Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, who remains under suspension from the party.
The leadership insisted that the party’s executive remains intact, with no leadership vacuum or need for any caretaker committee.
It affirmed that the current leadership will remain in office until 2028.
“Dr. Otti and his co-travellers must know by now that the train of the party has moved on and the party is focused ahead of the 2027 general election with or without them.
“We therefore denounce today’s meeting and call on the members of the party to ignore the outcome of the meeting. We also urge the governor to channel the Abia State resources to providing basic infrastructure for the good people of the state rather than wasting resources chasing shadows”, the statement read in part.
