Ogungbemide said the injured victim was evacuated to a medical facility for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attributed the fatal road traffic crash involving Nigerian-British boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway to excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking.
The accident occurred at about 12:00 noon on Monday, December 29, 2025, around the Sinoma area near Sagamu, Ogun State, and involved a Lexus Jeep conveying the world-renowned boxer and a stationary commercial truck, according to preliminary reports from the Ogun Sector Command of the FRSC.
The FRSC, in a statement issued by its Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, said it received a distress call shortly after the incident and that its operatives arrived at the scene within three minutes, enabling prompt rescue operations, evacuation of victims, effective traffic control, and the prevention of secondary crashes.
The agency stated that the crash involved two vehicles: a black Lexus Jeep with registration number KRD 850 HN (private) and a stationary red commercial Sinotruck with an unknown registration number, and a total of five adult males were involved.
“Two persons lost their lives, one sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt,” the FRSC said, adding that Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and sustained minor injuries.
Ogungbemide said the injured victim was evacuated to a medical facility for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu.
Ogungbemide noted that the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) was notified for further investigation and documentation.
According to Ogungbemide, preliminary investigations revealed that the Lexus Jeep was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit and lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre, colliding with a stationary truck “properly parked” by the roadside.
The FRSC said, “The primary causes of the crash being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways.”
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victim and Anthony Joshua a speedy recovery.
The FRSC reiterated its warning to motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking, excessive speed, and disregard for traffic regulations, particularly on high-speed corridors such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The FRSC also urged motorists to exercise patience, maintain lane discipline, and prioritise safety over haste, especially during the festive travel period.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safer roads through prompt emergency response and sustained public education aimed at reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities across the country.
