The African Democratic Congress (ADC), amid growing realignments in Nigeria’s political landscape, has denied knowledge of a viral social media report claiming that five serving governors, 18 senators, and several federal lawmakers are set to defect to the party.
The unverified message, which gained traction across WhatsApp and other platforms, listed Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Alex Otti (Abia), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), and the Zamfara State governor as part of the alleged defection wave.
The report also claimed the mass defection would be formalised at a mega rally scheduled for January 14, 2026, at Eagle Square, Abuja.
Reacting to the report, David Itopa, ADC’s Deputy National Welfare Secretary, told Vanguard that the party was unaware of any such plans.
“Concerning this matter, we do not have any information, but the party is open for all well-meaning Nigerians to rescue the country from immediate ruin,” Itopa said.
As the defection narrative fizzled, attention shifted to confirmed developments within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where a faction of the party has launched fresh consultations with key political figures.
Speaking on Channels Television on Wednesday, PDP South-South Chairman, Emmanuel Ogidi, revealed that the party had already met with former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) as part of moves to reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ogidi said, “So, we’re doing the rounds. We have already seen a former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, and a former President, IBB.
“It’s all about seeing those who are important in Nigeria to tell them that we are alive and we’re moving. I know you’re going to ask me about Obi. Yes, we also have plans to see Peter Obi.
“Even Atiku Abubakar, as the former vice president of the country, we are going to meet him. You see, PDP is the real face of democracy in Nigeria.”
Both Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar are former PDP presidential candidates. Obi, who was Atiku’s running mate in 2019, later contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party before joining the opposition coalition-led ADC.
Atiku also formally aligned with the ADC bloc after the 2023 polls, fueling speculation of a united front ahead of the next election cycle.
