The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be targeting a fourth continental title when they travel to Morocco for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The last time Nigeria won the competition was in 2013. However, none of the players who were part of that success are in the squad Eric Chelle is taking to Morocco.

Nonetheless, the current team still boasts some top players like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, and Calvin Bassey.

Among Nigerian football fans, expectations are low due to the team’s struggles in recent years. They failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even after being gifted a place in the playoffs. The team was also underwhelming in their only preparatory game for the AFCON.

However, the 2025 AFCON might just be where things finally click for the Super Eagles. Aside from pride and bragging rights, the money they stand to make will also be a big motivator for Eric Chelle and his boys.

In recent years, FIFA, the world football governing body, has been steadily increasing the prize money for its major competitions. CAF has followed suit, as all African competitions have received significant boosts in their prize pots.

Before the 2023 AFCON, CAF announced an increase in the prize pot to $32 million. And for the 2025 edition, the prize is still the same.

Even before the tournament begins, Nigeria has already earned $350,000 for topping their AFCON qualification group.

Now, for participating alone, Nigeria will also get some money. If the Super Eagles finish 4th in their group, they will get $500,000. But if they end up third, it will be $700,000.

However, with the talent in the Super Eagles squad, they should be aiming much higher.

A Round of 16 spot would fetch Nigeria $800,000, whether they finish first or second in their group.

If they make it to the quarterfinals, Nigeria will get an additional $1.3 million. Then, if they reach the semis, an extra $2.5 million will be added.

Second place at the AFCON will earn an extra $4 million. But if the Super Eagles win the competition in Morocco, they will receive an additional $7 million.
