AFCON U20: Aliyu Zubairu reveals two key things Nigeria need to edge ‘rivals’ Senegal

Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu believes the existing rivalry between Nigeria and Senegal calls for a maximum level of discipline and determination from the seven-time champions in order to see off competition from the Teranga Cubs when both sides clash in the quarterfinals of the ongoing U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Footynaija.com reports.

Having navigated the group stages without suffering any defeat while conceding in only one game so far, Zubairu’s Flying Eagles will be heading into the knockout rounds with plenty of confidence. However, a stern test awaits in the form of defending champions Senegal, who barely made it to the last eight despite finishing second in their group.

It is worthy of note that Nigeria has found games against Senegal at this level difficult to navigate in recent years. The Flying Eagles have suffered defeat in each of their last four meetings with the Teranga Cubs. Nevertheless, Zubairu insists that his boys are ready for the game and determined to do whatever it takes to win.

“We know what to expect. It is a big match for both teams because the winner will be going to the World Cup,” Zubairu said as per Pulse Sports.

“It is like a final match, and if you throw in the matter of the rivalry between our two countries, it means we must be disciplined and determined for the entire duration of the game. We will do just that.”

Zubairu and his charges are without any doubt eager to book the ticket that will see them make a 14th appearance at the FIFA U20 World Cup. All it will take to make this dream come through is a semi-final place at the ongoing AFCON but they must first prevail over the Teranga Cubs come Monday, May 12.
