Bandits have once more launched an attack on a community in the Borgu local government area of Niger State, killing four residents and rustling cattle.
The fresh assault came barely a week after gunmen invaded Kasuwan Deji in the same council area, killing 42 people.
The latest attack was reported around 11 pm on Friday in Wawa, after residents had gone to bed.
Wawa, a mining community said to have been operating illegally for some time, has frequently been targeted by criminal groups.
A reliable resident who spoke with our correspondent said the gunmen appeared to have a clear target and wasted no time executing their mission.
“They were armed with sophisticated weapons and invaded the village and targeted the victims before rustling their cattle,” he said.
“The victims were identified as controlling many cattle in the area and were therefore the main targets of the bandits.
“They went straight to their victims and killed them in their houses. They came purposely because of them, they were the target and they accomplished their target unhindered.
“All the cattle that were stolen were moved towards the Kainji Lake National Park Forest in Borgu Sector that night.”
The Kainji Lake National Park has become a notorious hideout for bandits in recent months, allowing them to operate freely.
Chairman of the Borgu Local Government Area, Mallam Abdullahi Mohammed Nasiru, confirmed the latest attack, saying the council remains heavily burdened by terrorist activities. He appealed for immediate assistance and repeated calls for intensified security patrols in vulnerable communities.
