The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has visited the two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet pilots who successfully ejected from their aircraft after experiencing a technical malfunction near NAF Base Kainji.
Aneke visited the aircrew to check on their well-being and to commend their professionalism and swift decision-making, which played a crucial role in ensuring their safe ejection despite the aircraft’s failure.
The jet, which had taken off from the Kainji base, crashed a few kilometres away from Karabonde town in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State on Saturday.
In a statement posted on Facebook on Sunday, the Nigerian Air Force confirmed that the Alpha Jet suffered a technical malfunction soon after take-off.
The pilots, demonstrating exceptional skill, steered the aircraft away from residential areas to prevent casualties before initiating a safe ejection.
The Air Force also noted that both pilots are currently undergoing standard medical checks and are in stable condition.
Air Marshal Aneke expressed his admiration for the pilots’ composure, praising their quick thinking in averting potential casualties. He stressed that their actions not only saved their lives but also protected nearby communities from harm.
“The professionalism displayed by the pilots under such stressful circumstances is commendable. Their actions undoubtedly saved lives and prevented a worse outcome,” Aneke said.
Aneke has ordered the immediate establishment of a Board of Inquiry to investigate the cause of the incident and review the circumstances surrounding the aircraft’s malfunction.
“The investigation will provide a detailed analysis of the situation to ensure that such incidents are avoided in the future,” said Air Marshal Aneke.
The Nigerian Air Force confirmed that its search and rescue teams, along with fire and crash response units and medical personnel, responded swiftly to secure the crash site and ensure the safety of the pilots.
The Air Force highlighted that the incident underscores the inherent risks associated with military aviation and the rigorous demands placed on personnel to maintain operational readiness.
