Passengers onboard an Air Peace flight from Lagos to Port Harcourt escaped unhurt on Saturday after the aircraft experienced a runway excursion at the Port Harcourt International Airport.

Naijaonpoint reports that the incident involved Flight P47190, which departed from the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, and veered slightly off the runway upon landing in Port Harcourt.

In a statement issued by the airline’s spokesperson, Osifo-Whiskey Efe, Air Peace confirmed that the aircraft “veered slightly off the runway” but assured the public that no damage was recorded.

In aviation, a runway excursion is an incident where an aircraft veers off or overruns the runway surface during takeoff or landing.

“All passengers disembarked safely and calmly without any injury,” Efe said.

He further stressed that the incident did not compromise passenger safety.

“We reassure the flying public of our unflinching commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety in all our operations,” the statement read.

Naijaonpoint understands that the incident, which happened on Saturday, is not the first runway excursion recorded in Nigeria in recent months.

On December 11, 2024, a Boeing 737-400 cargo aircraft operated by Allied Air skidded off Runway 22 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, after arriving from Lagos.

The aircraft, registered 5N-JRT, came to rest on the grass verge, raising safety concerns within the aviation community.
