Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has openly declared support for Senate President Godswill Akpabio to retain his position beyond 2027.
The governor said the continued leadership of Akpabio at the National Assembly is in the best interest of Akwa Ibom and the wider South-South region.
Eno made his position known on Sunday in Uyo during a Special Inter-denominational New Year’s Thanksgiving and Covenant Service attended by political leaders, clergy, and residents of the state.
He described Akpabio’s role as Senate President as strategic and symbolic for Akwa Ibom’s relevance at the national level.
Speaking during the service, the governor said Akwa Ibom people desire to see Akpabio remain in office, adding that opposition to such ambition could only come from those who do not wish the state well.
He stressed that retaining the Senate presidency would ensure the state continues to occupy a top position in Nigeria’s political hierarchy.
According to the governor, Akwa Ibom must combine prayers with deliberate political efforts to support Akpabio’s return as Senate President.
He said unity across political parties in the state is important to achieve this goal and protect the state’s collective interest at the centre.
Governor Eno said, “We will pray and work hard that Akpabio’s colleagues will return him as the Senate President, so that Akwa Ibom will continue to occupy the number three seat in this country.
“We are clear on that. We are very clear and it is only an enemy of this state that will not want our son to be the number three citizen. But if you are an Akwa-Ibomite and the blood of this state runs in you, you would love to see our son there. You will support this dream.
“You will support this vision, and we are clear on that across party lines. And I’m sure we are clear on the fact that God should continue to lead this state through this our humble servant. I’m sure you are clear on that,” Governor Eno said.
The governor’s remarks were met with applause from the congregation, reflecting strong local support for Akpabio’s continued stay as Senate President.
