Aladdin 2 Sequel Update: Star Addresses Filming Rumors

Aladdin 2‘s rumored filming status has been addressed by a star of the original 2019 live-action movie. Directed by Guy Ritchie, the original Aladdin remake was released in 2019, becoming Disney’s third-highest-grossing live-action remake, raking in more than $1 billion against a production budget of $183 million, and receiving mixed reviews from critics.

Aladdin‘s cast was headed up by Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, and Marwan Kenzari. The film’s success led to rumors of a follow-up, as well as a canceled prequel movie, and a spinoff film. Despite a six-year gap since the original Aladdin film, rumors continue to persist, but there has still been no official confirmation of an Aladdin 2 sequel film.

However, when replying to a post on X (formerly Twitter) Scott appeared to debunk the idea of an Aladdin sequel movie. An unofficial account named Naomi Scott Brasil, that is followed by the actress, Tweeted an exchange between themselves and Scott, in which the actress appeared to confirm that rumors that Aladdin 2 will begin filming next year are false.

She commented, “Completely fake… you can spread the word.” Check out the Tweet below:

This appears to put to bed any theories of a sequel in development, and until Disney officially confirms it, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up. Of course, it’s entirely possible that things are happening behind the scenes without Scott’s knowledge, but, being that she starred in the first movie, it feels likely that she would be privy to any developments.

Things in Hollywood move very slowly, and often behind the scenes. So it is entirely possible plans for Aladdin 2 have been made verbally, but nothing will be confirmed until the cast and crew are notified. The success of the first movie should mean a follow-up is likely, especially considering the financial flops Disney has endured the past few years.

In terms of Disney’s live-action remakes, it has been a mixed few years for the House of Mouse, with The Little Mermaid failing to reach the expected $1 billion mark, and Snow White‘s dismal box office performance. Aladdin was a bonafide hit six years ago, so it stands to reason that Disney would want to capitalize with a sequel in the future.

Of course, much may depend on the availability of the cast, and Scott, Smith, and Massoud’s schedules aligning. It seems likely that Scott would know if a sequel was in development. While it is highly likely that an Aladdin sequel will happen a some point in the future, nothing immediate is confirmed right now.
