Alex Otti advises residents against alcohol intake as heat wave worsens

The governor of Abia state has advised residents on some safety tips to survive the increasing heat wave following the change in weather conditions.

The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, in a statement on Wednesday, expressed serious concerns over the obvious changes in the weather conditions which he attributed to the effects of climate change.

According to the statement, heat waves have been on the increase both at day and night.

The statement further said that “the adverse effect of the current situation ranges from dehydration  which can lead to fainting, contacting of chicken pox, heat rashes and mental stress.

” Also associated with heat – waves are skin cancer, meningitis and in the worst case scenario death”, the statement added.

The statement recalled that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had advised on how to prepare for change in climatic conditions.

The statement advised residents to strictly adhere to recommendations by experts so as to stay out of trouble.

It read:”Abia State Government, therefore,  advises Nde Abia and residents to adhere to the recommendations by the experts in order to curb the threat associated with the heat – waves.

“The recommendations include that they should, drink more water and stay hydrated , avoid more consumption of alcoholic beverages and caffeinated beverages, reduce intake of food rich in  proteins because they increase metabolic activities as  fresh foods and  fruits are better alternatives, stay indoors between 12 noon and 4:30pm, take cold bath before going to bed at night, monitor their blood pressure always.”

“While the State government is reassuring the people of its commitment to their welfare and security, Abians are reminded that  health is wealth and that they should do all they can to live a healthy life”, The weather, for some weeks have been cloudy with increasing heat waves.
