“Alikula pesa yote nilipata”My son ate all my 10-years gulf savings money, I now beg for rent and food –

Immaculate Njeri’s story is one of sacrifice, betrayal, and shattered dreams. After spending more than a decade working in the Gulf with the hope of building a better life for her family, the single mother of two returned to Kenya only to find her dreams reduced to dust.

When she left Kenya in 2013, life was difficult, and she saw the Gulf as her only chance to lift her family out of poverty. Over the years, she worked tirelessly in Dubai, Bahrain, and later Qatar, sending every shilling she could spare back home. Her dream was clear — to save enough to buy land, build a beautiful house, and secure a comfortable future for her sons.

She entrusted her eldest son, Raphael, with managing the money. Njeri believed in him, trusting that he would handle their affairs responsibly while she endured the hardships of working abroad. But upon her return in September 2021, her hopes were crushed. The four savings accounts she had painstakingly built — in Cooperative Bank, KCB, Waumini Sacco, and Mshwari — were empty. Raphael had squandered everything.

The betrayal cut deeper when she learned that Raphael, who had once worked at the Holy Family Basilica, not only depleted her savings but also encouraged his younger brother to abandon school. All the sacrifices Njeri had made over the past ten years were undone in her absence.

Now, instead of enjoying the fruits of her labor, she has been pushed into desperation. Heartbroken and destitute, Njeri lives as a beggar on the streets of Donholm. Though her priest advised her against cursing her son, the bitterness and pain of betrayal weigh heavily on her heart.

Despite everything, a glimmer of hope remains. Her former employer in the Gulf has offered her a chance to return to work, and she contemplates taking it up, determined to rebuild her life from scratch.

Through tears and anguish, Njeri has one message for Raphael: a reminder of the sacrifices she made to educate and provide for him. Her plea is that he must face the consequences of his actions, for he not only robbed her of money but also of the dreams she had carried for over a decade.
