Details have begun to surface on the identities of 16 Nigerian military officers detained over the alleged coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to Premium Times, 14 of the officers are from the Nigerian Army, while two others belong to the Navy and the Air Force.
Among those held are a brigadier general, a colonel, four lieutenant colonels, five majors, two captains, and a lieutenant from the Army.
The other two include a lieutenant commander from the Navy and a squadron leader from the Air Force, both equivalent in rank to a major.
Sources who spoke with Premium Times disclosed that 12 of the Army officers are from the Infantry Corps, the Army’s frontline combat arm.
One officer is from the Signals Corps, responsible for communications, while another serves in the Ordnance Corps, which manages the procurement and maintenance of weapons, vehicles, and other military hardware.
Mostly Officers From NDA 56 Regular Course
Investigations revealed that most of the Army personnel in custody belong to the 56 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), who trained between September 27, 2004, and October 4, 2008.
Six members of this course, four lieutenant colonels and two majors, are among the first batch of those arrested. Others are drawn from the NDA’s 44th, 47th, 59th, and 60th Regular Courses, as well as Short Service Commission Courses 38 and 43.
The course affiliations of two Army officers, along with those of the naval and air force personnel, could not be immediately confirmed.
Findings further showed that 15 of the 16 detained officers hail from the North-Central, North-East, and North-West regions. The only exception is a lieutenant from the South-West, who is also the most junior suspect.
