The decision aims to help customers reduce foreign exchange costs and provide a localized payment experience, according to a statement from AWS. The Nigerian Naira is among eight new currencies now accepted by AWS, alongside the Chilean Peso (CLP), Colombian Peso (COP), Uruguayan Peso (UYU), Egyptian Pound (EGP), Polish Zloty (PLN), Romanian Leu (RON), and Ukrainian Hryvnia (UAH). AWS explained the rationale for this development: AWS’s embrace of local currency payments may be in response to growing competition from Nigerian cloud providers such as Nobus, Layer3, and Okra’s Nebula. These companies offer services priced in Naira, appealing to businesses seeking affordable alternatives amid fluctuating exchange rates. In 2024, the declining value of the Naira made dollar-denominated services increasingly difficult for local companies. By enabling Naira payments, AWS alleviates this burden, particularly for Nigerian startups and banks heavily reliant on its cloud services. AWS has actively invested in the Nigerian market to support its growing customer base.
