Analyzing NFF’s choice: Is Augustine Eguavoen the next Super Eagles coach after Jose Peseiro’s exit?

Augustine Eguavoen happy

Jose Peseiro oversaw 22 games while in command of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, winning 11, drawing four, and losing seven of them

The Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, Augustine Eguavoen, has stepped in as the interim coach of the Nigerian national team, as reported by Soccernet.ng.

Yesterday, José Peseiro, who led the Super Eagles of Nigeria to the final of the just-concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, bid farewell to the team as his contract expired.

Without the official announcement of Eguavoen’s takeover by the NFF or the Super Eagles, it is safe to report that it is the norm for the Technical Director of a football federation to take over the role of an interim coach until a permanent coach is appointed.

However, since the NFF has not made an official announcement about the new event, the 58-year-old will stand in, and he is likely to lead the team to their upcoming friendly clash against El Salvador later this month.

What happened to Peseiro’s deal?

Peseiro took over the Super Eagles job 22 months ago after an agreed $70,000 deal was sealed with the Nigerian Football body.

Meanwhile, a pay cut of $50,000 was tabled before him for the subpar performance of his team, which he agreed to before the 2023 AFCON tournament.

Having achieved what we can call a good result as his team came runners-up in the tournament, Peseiro expects a better deal, but the offer tabled is still the $50,000 which had reportedly led to his exit from the team.

Who is the Super Eagles next coach?

There have been names mentioned as the next coach of the Super Eagles, with Emmanuel Amuneke strongly on everyone’s lips as the next coach. Samson Siasia as well as Finidi George are not left out of the list as well.

Meanwhile, there have been reports in the Nigerian Football community that the NFF will likely not go for a foreign coach as they cannot afford one. But, there is a high possibility that the next coach will be a local coach.

As it stands, Eguavoen is slated to step in until a name is decided, and he is reportedly set to be assisted by Finidi George who assisted José Peseiro for over 22 months.
