Political parties and candidates participating in the Anambra State governorship election have signed a peace accord ahead of the vote scheduled for Saturday, November 8, 2025.
The ceremony took place on Monday at the International Convention Centre, Awka, and was organised by the National Peace Committee, chaired by former Head of State Abdulsalam Abubakar.
Bishop Mathew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto supervised the event.
Parties represented at the signing included the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Party, Action Alliance (AA), African Action Congress (AAC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Action Peoples Party (APP), Boot Party, and New Nigeria Political Party (NNPP), among others.
Speaking at the event, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, represented by Deputy Inspector General Ben Okolo, confirmed that adequate security personnel have been deployed across all 21 local government areas of the state.
“We call on candidates and their followers to embrace peace before, during, and after the election,” he said, stressing the importance of political tolerance and respect for democratic values.
The Chairman of INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan, also urged candidates and parties to commit to a peaceful and credible election.
The peace accord signing is seen as a significant step toward fostering harmony, mutual trust, and a violence-free environment as Anambra prepares for the November 8 governorship poll.
