Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have commenced movement to the designated polling stations in Awka South Local Government Area ahead of today’s Anambra Governorship Election.
At St. Matthew Catholic Church, Awka, INEC workers were sighted departing for various polling units in the early hours of Saturday.
Movement was equally brisk at the Community Primary School, Amawbia, where ad hoc staff covering Wards 01 and 02 arrived at exactly 7:07 a.m.
Buses conveying sensitive and non-sensitive election materials were seen leaving the venue as personnel moved to their assigned locations.
According to INEC, 2,802,790 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots across 5,718 polling units spread across the 21 local government areas of the state.
The election will be held simultaneously across the three senatorial districts, with 16 candidates vying for the governorship seat.
Top contenders include:
Governor Chukwuma Soludo (APGA)
Nicholas Ukachukwu (APC)
Paul Chukwuma (YPP)
George Moghalu (Labour Party)
Jude Ezenwafor (PDP)
Others from various political parties are also contesting for the state’s top position.
INEC has once again assured residents of a peaceful, transparent and credible election, promising strict adherence to electoral guidelines and timely deployment of personnel and voting materials across the state.
Voters are expected to begin accreditation and voting as scheduled.
