THE Anambra State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Chief Maja Umeh, former Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism.
He passed away today at the age of 64, just months before his 65th birthday.
Chief Umeh, a native of Amichi in Nnewi South Local Government Area, was born on October 7, 1960, in Enugu.
He was the seventh of eight children and began his early education at St. Mary’s Primary School, Uwani, Enugu, before completing it at St. Eugenia Primary School, Amichi, due to the disruptions of the Nigerian Civil War.
He later attended Christ the King College, Onitsha, where he graduated with his secondary school certificate in 1977.
In a statement released today, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, described Umeh’s death as a great loss to the state, highlighting his impactful contributions during his time in office.
“It is with profound sadness that the Government of Anambra State has received the news of Chief Maja Umeh’s passing. His contributions to the growth and development of the state were significant. As Commissioner, he worked tirelessly to promote our cultural heritage, expand tourism, and manage public information with integrity,” Mefor said.
He added that Umeh’s efforts played a key role in enhancing Anambra’s public image and fostering community development.
“His legacy is a testament to the value of dedicated public service and community involvement. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who mourn his passing. May his soul rest in peace.”
Chief Umeh was a longstanding member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and served on its Board of Trustees.
In October 2023, he was recognized as a Life Patron of the party in honor of his unwavering dedication and service.
Until his passing, he remained a prominent voice in political and cultural spheres, maintaining strong ties with notable leaders, including former Governor Peter Obi and the current Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.
Known as “Ọkwaka Amichi,” Umeh was a devout Christian, a peace advocate, and a respected titled Ozo man in his hometown. He lived a life marked by selfless service, charity, and a deep commitment to community development.
His death is a profound loss to Anambra State, the APGA family, and the Amichi community. He will be remembered for his enduring legacy of leadership, cultural advocacy, and unwavering devotion to the progress of his people.
