The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in the forthcoming November 8, 2025, Anambra State election, Dr. George Moghalu, has debunked speculations of a planned merger between the Labour Party (LP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the claims as false, baseless, and politically engineered.
Moghalu made this known on Tuesday during the official inauguration of the George Moghalu/Ifeoma Okaro Campaign Council in Awka, stating that the rumour was a desperate attempt by political opponents to diminish the LP’s growing popularity in the state.
The former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) noted that the alleged LP-ADC merger pertains only to discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections and has nothing to do with the Anambra governorship race.
He also pointed to a similar wave of falsehoods about LP’s national leader, Peter Obi, which had been publicly addressed.
“There is no iota of truth in the rumour. It is being circulated by those threatened by the strength, popularity, and acceptability of LP in Anambra State,” Moghalu said.
“When the propaganda first started that our leader, Peter Obi, had left the Labour Party, he came out to debunk it. He assured us of his support and even promised to attend our campaign rally in Onitsha this Friday.”
Addressing supporters at the campaign council launch, Moghalu admitted the challenge of unseating a sitting governor but expressed confidence in LP’s chances.
“This election is not a tea party. Removing an incumbent, even the lame one we have now, is not an easy task—but it has happened before, both here in Anambra and elsewhere,” he said.
He urged his campaign council to focus on grassroots mobilisation, insisting that electoral victory begins at the polling unit.
“Elections are won at the polling units, not in state capitals. That is where our real strength will be tested,” Moghalu said.
Director General of the Campaign Council, Okey Chukwuogo, expressed optimism about Moghalu’s chances, describing the team as ready and committed.
Also speaking at the event, LP State Chairman, Ugochukwu Emeh, assured the newly inaugurated council members that they were selected based on capacity and credibility.
“Our candidate is spiritually, physically, and financially prepared for this contest,” Emeh said.
“This journey demands maturity and focus-there is no room for bitterness or ego. The task is simple: deliver.”
The inauguration of the campaign council marks a significant milestone in LP’s bid to reclaim political control in Anambra, as the party ramps up its preparations to challenge the ruling administration at the polls.
