Anambra Police Confirms Release Of NDLEA State Director Kidnapped Days Ago

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the release of the abducted Director of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra State, Mr. Daniel Onyishi.
Mr. Onyishi, who was kidnapped in the early hours of June 12, 2025, along Winner Road in Awka, is now in safe custody and currently receiving medical attention, according to a statement issued on Saturday, June 22, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

“The Anambra State Police Command today, 22nd June 2025, confirmed the release of the abducted NDLEA Anambra State Director, Mr. Daniel Onyishi. He is currently in safe custody and receiving medical attention,” the statement read

The release followed coordinated efforts between the police and sister security agencies, particularly a special team of covert operatives from the NDLEA led by the Zone 12 Commander, Mrs. Florence Ezeonye.

“The Police, in collaboration with sister agencies, especially the high-powered covert operatives of the NDLEA led by Mrs. Florence Ezeonye, the Zone 12 Commander, complemented the aggressive rescue efforts which helped secure the victim’s safe return,” Ikenga noted.

In response to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD, has reportedly briefed the Police High Command and activated the directive of the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that the kidnappers are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice

Efforts are ongoing to track down and prosecute the perpetrators of the abduction.

The incident had triggered widespread concern among residents and security stakeholders in the state, given the growing trend of high-profile kidnappings across the Southeast.
