THE governor of Anambra State, Charles Soludo, has directed the arrest of security operatives linked to the shooting near Emeka Offor Plaza in Onitsha Main Market, which left one person dead and others injured yesterday.
The governor’s order, according to a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, came shortly after the incident.
Soludo instructed that the suspects be handed over to the police for prosecution and that medical care be provided for the injured.
Mefor confirmed that the victim, identified as Miss Chinwe Igwe, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, where her body has been deposited for autopsy.
Other victims are currently receiving treatment and responding well, he added.
The government commended the swift intervention of the police in restoring order at the market and assured that investigations are underway to prevent a recurrence.
The security personnel involved were said to be members of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra Brigade (OCHA Brigade), a state enforcement unit responsible for environmental and sanitation regulations.
Authorities have since intensified patrols and monitoring in the area to maintain calm.
