Tension is mounting in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as it finalises preparations for its 102nd National Executive Committee meeting, which is scheduled to hold today (Thursday) in Abuja, to decide on the zoning of party offices ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Naijaonpoint understands that the NEC, the party’s second-highest decision-making organ, is expected to deliberate on the report of its National Zoning Committee and receive briefings from the National Convention Planning Committee.

Indications have emerged that the zoning committee has resolved to retain the existing arrangement, with the national chairmanship remaining in the North.

Currently, the position is zoned to the North and micro-zoned to the north central, while the office of the national secretary is zoned to the South and micro-zoned to the Southeast.

Other northern slots include deputy national chairman (North), national organising secretary, national treasurer, national youth leader, and national legal adviser.

For the South, the positions include deputy national chairman (South), deputy national secretary, national publicity secretary, national financial secretary, national auditor, and national woman leader.

Party sources who spoke with Daily Sun, however, hinted that some positions may be swapped among the geopolitical zones.

Under the proposed arrangement, the South-West is expected to produce the national secretary. In contrast, the South-South may produce the deputy national chairman (South), and the South-East the deputy national secretary.

A source at the PDP National Secretariat told Daily Sun, “Tomorrow’s NEC means a lot to the party and the various interests, as far as the 2027 contest is concerned. Whatever happens will define the outlook of the party in the next general elections.”

In the build-up to today’s NEC, the PDP National Working Committee held a crucial meeting at the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters yesterday. At the same time, the National Caucus was also billed to meet at the Bauchi Governors Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.

In attendance at the meetings were the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum; National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu; Deputy National Secretary, Setonji Koshedo; and other NWC members.
