The Labour Party (LP) suffered a major upset on Saturday after losing in the polling unit of its national figurehead and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during the ongoing Anambra governorship election.
At Polling Unit 019, Agulu Ward 11, in Anaocha Local Government Area, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Nicholas Ukachukwu, secured 73 votes, defeating the LP candidate, George Moghalu, who scored 57 votes.
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate placed third with 38 votes.
Obi had cast his ballot earlier at the same unit, where residents anticipated a strong LP showing in a community where he previously commanded overwhelming support, winning over 95 per cent of votes in 2023.
In a related development, APC candidate, Ukachukwu also recorded victory in the polling unit of the incumbent governor, Soludo, as early results trickled in across the state.
At Umudimala 1, PU 011, Osumenyi Ward 2, Nnewi South Local Government Area, where Ukachukwu cast his vote at 11:46 a.m., he polled 126 votes, according to the INEC presiding officer, Esther Ojukwu.
Governor Soludo scored only six votes at the unit.
Naijaonpoint reports that the early arrival of election materials and personnel facilitated the timely commencement of voting, which has been described as a two-horse race between Ukachukwu (APC) and Soludo (APGA).
