A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has berated President Bola Tinubu over the withdrawal of police protection from VIPs.
Naijaonpoint recalls that, according to a statement issued by the Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the directive formed part of the resolutions reached during the President’s high-level security meeting with Service Chiefs in Abuja.
Onanuga said the move is aimed at restoring the police to their “core duties” and improving their presence in communities grappling with insecurity.
Under the new arrangement, VIPs seeking armed security escorts must now apply to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
In a post via 𝕏 Kenneth Okonkwo, opined that withdrawing police protection from VIPs is a wrong decision, referencing the death of American political activist, Charlie Kirk.
The movie star turned politician stated that Nigeria has not recovered from the death of the former Minister of Justice, Bola Ige and the late politician, Funso Williams, who were shot in the absence of security details.
According to Kenneth, many politicians, especially members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), will be killed over Tinubu’s directive because of the anger of Nigerians against them.
He wrote, “President Tinubu’s greatest problem is his consistency of talking before thinking. The express order withdrawing police protection from VIPs is a wrong decision.
“VIPs most times face security situations which ordinary people do not face. Charlie Kirk was shot in America just because he is a VIP. If anything happens to Dangote, or Wole Soyinka, or Emeka Anyaoku, you will understand the importance of protecting everyone, whether VIP or not.
“Nigeria has not recovered from the shooting of Bola Ige when his security details withdrew to eat for hours. Funso Williams was killed in Lagos because he had no security details.
“If you withdraw police protection from politicians, most of them, especially from APC will be shot almost immediately, because of the anger of the people against them.
“The government has a duty to protect even the criminals in detention. This is why it will not be right to risk the life of anybody to score cheap political point. If, however, Tinubu wants to prove a point, let him withdraw the police protection of his children first.
“What @officialABAT should do is to increase the number of police men to protect everyone, not to remove protection from certain categories.”
