Apple Intelligence for iPhones and iPads in the EU coming in April 2025

Today, Apple announced the first set of Apple Intelligence features for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The latest AI features are coming via iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 update. Apple Intelligence is currently available on the iPhone 16 series, iPhone 15 Pro models, iPad with A17 Pro or M1 and later, and Mac with M1 and later. Users in most regions with eligible devices can try the new Apple Intelligence features. However, those in the European Union (EU) must wait until April 2025 to use Apple Intelligence on their iPhones and iPads.

Apple Intelligence will be available for iPhones and iPads in the EU in April next year

At WWDC 2024, the company announced that Apple Intelligence features won’t be available to users in the European Union (EU) at launch. Apple highlighted the Digital Markets Act (DMA) as the reason for the delayed launch of Apple Intelligence in the EU. Today, folks over at 9to5Mac spotted the official words about this delay in the European version of the company’s website.

A part of the translated press release on that website reads “In April, Apple Intelligence features will begin rolling out to iPhone and iPad users in the EU.” Let’s not forget that the EU antitrust regulation only impacts iPhones and iPads. Therefore, Mac users in the EU can try the latest Apple Intelligence features with macOS Sequoia 15.1 now.

Apple has also announced a software update will release in April 2025 which will add more languages to Apple Intelligence. Interestingly, that list includes some European languages such as French, German, and Italian. So, it’s safe to say Apple Intelligence users in the EU will get local language support at launch.

More features are coming with iOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2

Worth noting that currently Apple Intelligence only works in US English. However, Apple Intelligence will start supporting English from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK in December, most likely with iOS 18.2.

The first batch of Apple Intelligence features include Writing Tools, notification summaries, live transcriptions, etc. However, iOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2 update will add more AI features. The next update will bring features like ChatGPT integration, Image Playground, Visual Intelligence, Genmoji, and more.
