Apple announced the iPhone 16 series on September 9, 2024. Live from the Steve Jobs Theater on Apple’s campus in Cupertino. It comes in vibrant new colors, especially compared to the iPhone 15, along with two new buttons. The Action Button that debuted on the iPhone 15 Pro last year comes to the regular iPhone 16, and there’s the new Camera Control button. Not the rumored “Capture Button”. Surprisingly, the prices are still the same, $799 for the iPhone 16 and $899 for iPhone 16 Plus.

Apple iPhone 16 Specs

The specs are pretty much what you’d expect from an iPhone in 2024. That’s 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, and available in five colors: Ultramarine, Teal, Pink, Black and White.

Under the hood, both phones are powered by the A18 chipset. This sports a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. Apple doesn’t disclose the RAM, nor the battery size, but we believe that there is at least 8GB of RAM inside. However, Apple does say that the iPhone 16 will get 22 hours of video playback, and 27 hours on the iPhone 16 Plus. That’s an increase of 1-2 hours for each model.

On the camera front, both phones get a 48-megapixel Fusion camera, and a 12-megapixel ultrawide. There’s also a 12-megapixel front-facing cameras. Apple is still allowing for 2x optical zoom by cropping in on that 48-megapixel primary camera.

The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus start at $128, but are also available in 256GB and 512GB models, topping out at $1,199.

Surprisingly, they both lost a little bit of weight this year, about 2g each. The iPhone 16 has dimensions of 147.6 x 71.6 x 7.80mm, and the Plus is 160.9 x 77.8 x 7.80mm. They weight 170g and 199g respectively.

How much is the iPhone 16

The iPhone 16 has the same price as the iPhone 15. Coming in at $799 for 128GB of storage. You can jump up to 256GB for $899 and 512GB for $1,099. The iPhone 16 Plus is also the same price as last year, starting at $899 for 128GB. Though there is also 256GB available for $999 and 512GB for $1,199.

Apple also noted that through its carrier partners you can trade in your iPhone 12 or newer and get up to $800 off. Which makes the iPhone 16 much cheaper.

Where can I buy the iPhone 16

You will be able to buy the iPhone 16 series virtually anywhere. Anywhere that sells tech will offer the iPhone 16 series. That includes Apple, Amazon, AT&T, Best Buy, B&H Photo, Costco, Sam’s Club, T-Mobile, Verizon and many other options. A number of MVNOs will also sell the iPhone 16, including Visible, Xfinity Mobile, and many more.

Keep in mind that on Apple’s website, you’ll be able to pay in installments using your Apple Card and the iPhone Upgrade Program. This allows you to upgrade every year without changing how much you’re paying. The price is a bit higher here, but that is also because AppleCare is included in the upgrade program.

What colors does the iPhone 16 come in?

Thank goodness Apple has much more vibrant colors for the iPhone 16 this year. Last year, it seemed like Apple was running out of ink. Both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will be available in Ultramarine, Teal, Pink, White, and Black.

What features will the iPhone 16 bring?

The iPhone 16 does indeed get Apple Intelligence this time, while the iPhone 15 did not. This is likely down to the amount of RAM in the iPhone 15. Apple Intelligence includes the new Siri, which will be in beta next month, and expand to more languages in December. It also includes writing tools, voice transcription for recordings and summaries, and much more.

Console-quality games

This was a feature for the iPhone 15 Pro last year, but unfortunately, due to the regular iPhone 15 sticking to the A16 Bionic, it did not receive these console games. That changes this year with its move to the A18 chipset. So now you can play loads of great games on your iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. Including a new game from Tencent that’s coming soon, called Honor of Kings: World.

Of course there are others available too like Resident Evil 4, Assassin’s Creed Mirage and more. For those that are big time gamers, this is going to be a big deal. Additionally, Apple has also improved the cooling in all four iPhone 16 models. That was a real issue last year with the iPhone 15 models, especially the Pros with its Titanium chassis.

Camera Control

The much rumored Capture Button is here, as Camera Control. This button is actually really cool. It’s a capacitive button, so we’re going to see lots of cases with cutouts for this button, unfortunately. But it means that you can slide your finger across the button to change the zoom, exposure and aperture. It is also being used for Apple’s new Visual Intelligence feature, which sounds a lot like Google Lens. You can use the Camera Control button to snap a photo and figure out what’s in that picture. Like a new restaurant, you can get more info on it from Visual Intelligence.

Upgraded ultrawide camera

Apple has upgraded the ultrawide camera, it’s still a 12-megapixel sensor, but it will allow for macro photography now. Something that the iPhone 15 surprisingly didn’t have. It also supports Spatial Photos and Videos, which is why the camera orientation changed this year.

What cases are available for the iPhone 16?

So what cases can you buy for iPhone 16? There’s loads of them actually, and unsurprisingly, FineWoven is nowhere to be seen. But apparently, Apple did release new FineWoven MagSafe wallets, in some new colors too.

Apple Silicone Case

MYY53

A pretty popular case for iPhone users is Apple’s own Silicone case, which is priced at $49. It’s available in a bunch of different colors including Ultramarine, Star Fruit, Lake Green, Fuchsia, Stone Gray, Plum, Black and Denim.

Nomad is also selling its usual leather cases for the iPhone 16 this year. Although the Horween options are limited to just the Pro models. But the regular leather is available here, as well as the leather magnetic backs. These are really great leather cases that offer an incredible patina after you’ve used them for a few months.
